Where do you get ideas for blog post subjects?
I never start with a blank sheet of paper – I always start by planning my content in advance and have a content plan for at least six months so that I always have a lot of ideas to write about. That planning is crucial when you are having to think up something every single week. There are sites out there called Headline Generators which you can use to come up with potential blog titles, and I also use Google Keywords to help me come up with the best subjects for my blog writing.
How do I start up a blog?
There are many free platforms you can use to set up a blog easily yourself, or make it a part of your current website. The key to good blog writing is to have a planned calendar of content so that you don’t suddenly run out and then end up with an out-of-date blog which is really worse than not having a blog at all.
How do I get an audience for my blog?
The best way to grow an audience and get followers is to create amazing and interesting content which your audience want to read. So many blogs are just people talking about their daily lives or ranting, which has a place, but if you want a sustainable blog it needs to contain information of interest and value.
What exactly does a copywriter do all day?
The role of a copywriter varies depending on how they are working but personally, I never have one day the same as the next. I spend my time meeting with clients, networking at business events, and of course, writing projects for my clients, from a single blog post to an entire website. Personally, I love the variety of life as a full-time professional copywriter.
How do I get a job as a copywriter?
There are many copywriter jobs around, whether you work full-time for a particular company, or you work in a creative agency for many clients, or set up on your own as a freelance, there are many job opportunities out there. You need to create a portfolio of work and check out some of the common job websites for copywriting jobs in your local area. I will be setting up an online training course for would-be copywriters in 2018.
Are there different types of copywriting?
Yes, there are as many different styles and types of writing as you can imagine. Writing advertising slogans is very different to writing scientific reports for a pharmaceutical business, so writing as a job has a huge amount of variety and potential.
Does copywriting mean you write books?
No, people who write books are known as authors generally, but copywriters might well write short e-books which are used as marketing tools by companies and are often given away as free items to encourage website traffic.
What exactly does SEO mean?
Search Engine Optimisation. It is a way of writing for websites to make sure that people searching for particular elements, will be able to find your website. So, for example, I’d want people searching for copywriting services to find my website easily, so I need to include relevant and valuable content about that on my website, so that it pops up on Google.
What pages do I need to include on my website?
It really depends on your business and what you want to achieve, but most websites have at least a Home Page, About Us Page, Services Page and Contact Us Page, because these enable the website visitors to find out who the company is, what they do, and how to get in touch.
Can I write my own website content or do I need a writer?
Well, of course you can write it yourself if you are a confident writer, but it can be hard to take that step back and come up with the right way to describe your own business, so in terms of establishing tone of voice and brand personality, it can be more effective to employ a professional copywriter to do it for you.
If my website content is out of date, do I need to get a new website?
No, not necessarily, it may be the perfect time to have a free content review and look at updating your website content, rather than opting for a whole new site. It is a lot cheaper to update and create new content, rather than build a whole new site. A review will highlight content that isn’t working for your business, as well as gaps where you need new types of content to be created.
